In 1751 George Washington contracted smallpox, yet survived. Having had the disease before enabled him to survive even though the disease took many of his men when it rampaged through his troops many years later.
Another time his life was spared when he nearly drowned on his return trip from a mission for the governor of Virginia. It was the publshing of this adventure that made him famous here and across the ocean.
In 1775 during a battle two horses were shot out from under him and 4 bullets ripped through his clothes while he remained unhurt. Though he lost more battles than he won, he led his troops to final victory in the War for Independence.
