Does It Really Matter?

Your thoughts can be prayers. When your thoughts are directed to God moment by moment, your whole life becomes communion with God. This is how we become one with the Father. This is how He gets involved with everything that concerns us.

 Stuff matters

Today I was speaking with a young man who expressed his success with the Game With Minutes. He said he has often heard people say that Jesus was all that mattered. This had always made him feel condemned because it wasn’t true for him. There were other things that mattered-a lot. He said that Jesus was number one with him. In fact, Jesus was everything to Him, but to say He was all that mattered would be lying.

By playing the game, this young man realized that what matters to him, matters to God. He could bring Jesus into all of his moments, and God would enhance everything that mattered to him. This was immensely freeing for him. He doesn’t see Jesus at a distance pointing a finger at him for thinking of something else. He now sees Jesus close to Him caring about what he cares about. It’s a relationship where Jesus brings life to everything that matters.

What are things that matter to you? Someone very close to you wants to talk to you about these. Play the Game With Minutes today, and see how much better your day goes. You are not alone!

“This game is not a grim duty. Nobody need play it unless he seeks richer life. It is a delightful privilege. If you forget to play it for minutes or hours or days, do not groan or repent, but begin anew with a smile. It is a thrilling joy. Ahead of you lie limitless anticipations”. (Laubach, 1933, The Game With Minutes, p. 28)

Tips, Hints, Helps, and Strategy for Playing the Game With Minutes

“Any hour of any day may be made perfect by merely choosing. It is perfect if one looks toward God that entire hour, waiting for His leadership all through the hour and trying hard to do every thing exactly as God wishes it done, as perfectly as possible. Just the doing of God’s will makes the hour a perfect one.” (Practicing His Presence, p. 11)

The Best Times in Your Life

When you think back to your best hours, your best days, the best times in your life, weren’t they your most spiritual times? Were they the times you felt closest to God? We’ve had great times with family and friends, for sure, but when we set the best of those times beside of the best times we have had with God, we can clearly see the depth of the joy experienced in God’s Presence. This reminds us that any price that is paid, is enormously worth it! The price we pay is a gentle pressure of our will to come back to thoughts of Jesus and awareness of His Presence. When our mind wanders away, as it will, we gently bring it back. Every minute is a new beginning.

  • “The way to a more consistent high level is to take Him into everything we do or say or think.” (Game With Minutes, p. 6)
  • The silent words that make up our thoughts are really inner conversation with ourselves. Instead, as we turn all of our thoughts to God, we make all thought a conversation with God.
  • We are attempting to hold God in our mind every minute we are awake. We will meet with failure, but even the smallest amount of success is splendid!
  • ” The moment I turn to Him, it is like turning on an electric current which I feel through my whole being.” (Practicing His Presence, p 17.)
  • “I am finding every day the best of the five or six ways that I try to keep contact with God is for me to wait for His thoughts, to ask Him to speak.” (p.15)

My personal technique:

  • I set a timer for an hour. At the end of the hour I evaluate my percentage of success.
  • I set a 5 minute timer to see if I can spend all of the 5 minutes thinking of Jesus without wandering.
  • I picture myself in a quiet place, usually by a stream and from there I think of Jesus with me talking and listening to Him.
  • I ask Him questions and listen for His answers, or I ask Him questions and wait for His answers.

“This concentration on God is strenuous, but everything else has ceased to be so. I think more clearly. I forget less frequently. Things which I did with a strain before I now do easily and with no effort whatever. I worry about nothing and lose no sleep. I walk on air a good part of the time.” (p. 16)
