A to Z Scripture Adventure: N is Romans 8:35

NNothing, zero, not anything, nada can separate us from the love of God! Romans 8:35 is a question. The answer is “Nothing.” I paraphrased the verse and taught our students to put the answer in their heart through meditating this life-transforming verse:

Nothing can separate us from the love of God.

N15Here’s the verse from three versions of the Bible:

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? Romans 8:35 KJV

Who shall ever separate us from Christ’s love? Shall suffering and affliction and tribulation? Or calamity and distress? Or persecution or hunger or destitution or peril or sword? Romans 8:35  AMP

Do you think anyone is going to be able to drive a wedge between us and Christ’s love for us? There is no way! Not trouble, not hard times, not hatred, not hunger, not homelessness, not bullying threats, not backstabbing, not even the worst sins listed in Scripture: Romans 8:35 The Message

The answer is Nothing can separate us from the love of God! When the students and I said this verse, it had a jingle to it. I wish you could hear it. We said it like this, “Nothing ca-aan separate us from God’s love,” and then each student would call out something that “can’t separate us from God’s love.” They would randomly pick something and shout it out. Then we would do the verse again. They could choose anything that came to mind, and sometimes it was a unique thought. Here’s what it sounded like:

“Nothing can separate us from God’s love.”

“Not the devil!”

“Nothing can separate us from God’s love.”

“Not Drugs!”

“Nothing can separate us from God’s love.”

“Not Death!”

“Nothing can separate us from God’s love.”

“Not Sickness!”

“Nothing can separate us from God’s love.”

“Not Cotton Candy!” (?) I know, but that’s the kind of things that could come out of a child’s mouth. No wonder God loves the little children so much!

Meditating on God’s love and knowing that nothing can separate us from that love will change us! Here’s the list of “what can’t separate us” taken from the three translations above.

  2. distress
  3. persecution
  4. famine
  5. nakedness
  6. peril
  7. sword
  8. suffering
  9. affliction
  10. calamity
  11. hunger
  12. destitution
  13. trouble
  14. hard times
  15. hatred
  16. hunger
  17. homelessness
  18. bullying threats
  19. backstabbing,
  20. and not even the worst sins.

Isaiah 59:2 tells us that sin separates us from God, yet Romans 8:35 tells us nothing, not even sin separates us from His love. His love draws us to repentance. We do not want to hurt Someone Who loves us, so we quickly come back to Him where we can thrive once again in His Loving Presence.

Tip: When you’re saying your verse for the day ten times ten times, put a little rhythm or tune to it. It will take on a character of it’s own that way and seep into your heart more quickly.
